Madeira
Our trip to Madeira was fabulous. We stayed in Funchal, which was an old fishing village with the big cruise ship terminal right across the street. There were a lot of ugly modern buildings with peeling paint. The primary industry of Madeira is wine and the evening was spent strolling around the little plazas and watching some local dancing with the locals.
We rented an apartment which had a large apartment with a nice open area with a huge living room and dining room and one bedroom and a large bathroom. It was beautiful and we had a very large balcony with a view of the harbor and the ocean. The apartment was rented for $225 a night. They were remodeling the unit when we were there, so it didn't look as nice, but it was fairly nice overall. We had a nice view out to the ocean and a great balcony. There was a little laundry room off the living room and a little snack bar with a microwave and fridge/freezer, so we were able to get basic groceries. The apartment was a nice size and we had plenty of room for our clothes and stuff. There were two ceiling fans, so we were comfortable, even when the AC was blasting.
The first day of our visit, we drove to the beach and walked for several hours. There was a wonderful little public park with a beach, a playground and a pool and volleyball court, so we went there every day. It was nice to have a beach where we didn't have to worry about nasty people, which was very nice. The tide was ac619d1d87
